Athen ist durch die weltweite Finanzkrise von 2009 heute eine Art exotischer Schauplatz eines globalen Dramas, das viele anlockte, darunter auch die Kuratoren der jüngsten documenta14. Was kann „Lernen von Athen“ in einer Zeit des Umbruchs für Europa bedeuten, in der alle Werte, die auf europäischem Boden verwurzelt sind und die unser kulturelles Erbe tragen, in Frage gestellt werden? Was bleibt nach der Entzauberung eines Landes, des seit dem Philhellenismus im 18. Jahrhundert über die Saga eines Touristenparadieses bis hin zum Stigma der Krise senstationalistischer Stereotypisierung unterliegt? Was bedeuten diese Fragen für gesellschaftliche Koexistenz in einem ethisch zerrütteten System?
In Vorträgen und Podiumsdiskussionen im Programm ATHENS TALKS vom 15.- 16. November 2019 diskutieren die KünstlerInnen, warum Athen ein Knotenpunkt von Herausforderungen und Transformationen bleibt, mit denen sich eine europäische Kultur befassen sollte, die ihren gegenwärtigen Erschöpfungszustand erreicht zu haben scheint.
Mit einem griechischen Festival in der deutschen Hauptstadt Berlin möchten wir eine langfristige deutsch-griechische Zusammenarbeit auf künstlerischer Ebene fördern und eine Infrastruktur für kulturellen Austausch anregen. Die gemeinnützige Initiative AthenSYN, die 2016 von Kulturwissenschaftlerin Katja Ehrhardt und Kunsthistoriker Sotirios Bahtsetzis gegründet wurde, sensibilisiert das Publikum für den Kontext von Kunst als Forum für den Dialog in einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Zukunft Europas. Dahinter steht der Gedanke, daß europäische Krisen mehr brauchen als die Summe nationaler Antworten. Im Zentrum der europäischen Krise stellt Griechenland Fragen, die ganz Europa betreffen.

Since the beginning of the European idea, Athens has been an exoticized utopia. Recently, as a result of the 2009 worldwide financial crisis, Athens has become the exotic scene of a global drama that has attracted many, including the curators of the recent documenta14.
What can "learning from Athens" mean in a time of upheaval for Europe in which all values rooted in European soil that underpin our cultural heritage are questioned? What is left after the demystification of a country that has been subject to stereotyping since 18th century philhellenism, labeled a tourist paradise, and imprinted with the stigma of the crisis? Why are these questions essential for social coexistence in an ethically corroded system?
The festival Athen SYN I opens its doors with the exhibition HOMEMADE EXOTICA. 16 contemporary Greek artists present their positions and discuss questions that the documenta14 left open to further evaluation.
In lectures and panel discussions during the program ATHENS TALKS on November 15th and 16th, 2019 the artists investigate co-existence in a world full of preconceived notions and expectations of the Other, the practices of art production in a failing market, and survival strategies based on communality, mutual support and individual contribution to the community. At the same time, they discuss why Athens remains a hub of challenges and transformations that should be addressed by a European culture that seems to have reached its present state of exhaustion.
